BYD sells more electric cars than Tesla

BYD's record-breaking sales in the electric vehicle market highlight the challenges faced by Tesla.

Try this article at a different level?

A car company from China called BYD sold more electric cars than Tesla in the last part of the year. BYD sold 526,000 cars that only use batteries, which is more than Tesla sold at that time. But for the whole year, Tesla sold more cars, with 1.8 million cars. Tesla did better than people thought they would, selling 20% more cars than last year.

BYD did really well and it shows that it’s getting harder for Tesla because more companies are making electric cars. BYD made over 3 million cars that are good for the air, including ones with batteries and ones that use both gas and batteries. BYD makes its own batteries, which saves them money. Tesla’s other rivals have to buy batteries from different companies.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a piece of paper with a word or phrase related to the article written on it (e.g. “electric car,” “BYD,” “Tesla”). One member of the group will act out the word or phrase without speaking, while the other members try to guess what it is. The group that guesses correctly gets a point.

– Sketch It
Instructions: Give each student a piece of paper and a pencil. Ask them to sketch a scene or object related to the article (e.g. a car, a battery, a factory). After a few minutes, have each student show their sketch to the class and explain what it represents.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Divide the class into pairs. Give each pair a list of vocabulary words from the article (e.g. “electric cars,” “batteries,” “rivals”). One student will draw a picture to represent a word, while the other student tries to guess what it is. After a set amount of time, have the pairs switch roles.

– Headline Creation
Instructions: Write the following sentence on the board: “Chinese car company outsells Tesla in electric car market.” Ask students to create a headline using this information. Give them a few minutes to think of their own headline and then have them share with the class.

– Future Predictions
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Ask each group to discuss and make predictions about the future of electric cars. They can use information from the article and their own ideas. After a few minutes, have each group share their predictions with the class.
