Ukrainian Refugees Starting Businesses in New Countries

Anastacia and Oleksiyy left Ukraine when they heard bombing in February 2022. They had to find a safe place to live and work. They arrived in the UK and found the people to be friendly, but it was hard to find jobs. So they started their own business dry-cleaning furniture. They had orders from local people wanting to help them grow their business. Ukrainian refugees have gone to many different countries to find work. Yulia, who used to run a wedding-dress business in Ukraine, moved to Nottingham. She found it hard to start the business in the UK, so she decided to find a full-time sewing job instead. Polina, who worked as a dance choreographer and instructor in Ukraine, moved to Canada. She started Polli’s Dance, teaching Canadian children and children of other Ukrainian refugees. Regina and Volodymyr left Ukraine in 2014 after their business was destroyed, and moved to Perth, Western Australia. They started another business selling plants.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– DRAW YOUR JOURNEY
Instructions: Give each student a piece of paper and some colored pencils or markers. Ask them to draw a picture of their own journey so far, including where they were born, where they have lived or traveled, and where they are now. Then, have them share their picture with a partner and describe their journey in English.

– TELL YOUR STORY
Instructions: Have the students sit in a circle. Choose one student to start by telling a short story about themselves, such as where they were born, their favorite hobby, or something interesting they did recently. Then, the next student must repeat the first student’s story and add their own story. This continues around the circle until everyone has had a turn. This activity helps students practice listening and speaking skills.
