Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Sketch It
Instructions: Show students a simple drawing of an artist painting. Ask them to guess the topic of today’s lesson. After revealing the article is about an artist, have students try to sketch something from the article, like a paintbrush, a portrait, or an art gallery, based on their understanding of the keywords you provide (e.g., artist, pictures, art school). Have them share their sketches with a partner and explain their drawings in simple English.

– Word Association
Instructions: Write the word “artist” on the board. Ask students to say or write any words they associate with an artist, such as “paint,” “picture,” “famous,” etc. After collecting a list of words, read the article and have students clap every time they hear one of the words they associated with “artist.”

– News Reporter Role-play
Instructions: Split the class into groups of two. One student is a news reporter, the other is Amoako Boafo. The reporter should ask questions about Amoako’s life and art (e.g., “Where are you from?” “Did you always want to be an artist?”). The student playing Amoako must answer based on information from the article. This encourages speaking practice and comprehension.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: After discussing the article, write a statement on the board: “Art is important for everyone.” Students walk around the class and ask their classmates whether they agree or disagree with the statement, and why. This gets students to practice forming simple opinions and reasons in English.

– Future Predictions
Instructions: Discuss the article briefly, then have students practice the future tense by making predictions about Amoako Boafo’s career. Prompts could include “Amoako will…” or “His art will be…”. Each student can write down their prediction and share it with the class. This helps with future tense construction and encourages imaginative use of language.
