Africa's passionate Formula 1 fans are demanding a race on the continent, with Kenya hosting lively viewing parties and female fans taking on active roles in the sport.

Try this article at a different level?

Many people in Africa love watching Formula 1 (F1) car races. But there are no F1 races in Africa right now. Fans have to go to other places to watch the races. A TV show called “Drive to Survive” made more people in Africa like F1. Watching races online also helps fans enjoy the sport.

In Kenya, fans have fun at F1 viewing parties. These parties have games, free drinks, prizes, and music. A famous person named Joy Jeptoo helps make these parties fun. More girls in Africa are also becoming F1 fans. Some even make F1 podcasts and go to races in other countries.

Africa has not had an F1 race for over 30 years. Fans and driver Lewis Hamilton want a race in Africa. They think it is not fair that the US has three races and Africa has none. There are talks about having races in Morocco, Rwanda, or Zanzibar. But many people think South Africa is the best place for a race.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a card with a word or phrase related to the article (e.g. Formula 1, F1 race, viewing party, Lewis Hamilton). One person from each group will act out the word or phrase without speaking, while the other group members try to guess what it is. The group that guesses correctly gets a point. Repeat with different words or phrases.

– Word Association
Instructions: Write the words “Formula 1” on the board. Ask the students to think of words or phrases that they associate with Formula 1, based on the article. Write their responses on the board. Encourage them to explain why they chose each word or phrase. Discuss as a class and see if any common associations emerge.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Give each student a piece of paper and ask them to fold it in half. On one side, they should write a vocabulary word from the article (e.g. F1 race, viewing party, Lewis Hamilton) and draw a picture to represent it. On the other side, they should write the definition or a sentence using the word. When everyone is finished, have them take turns showing their drawings and asking their classmates to guess the word.

– Speed Summarizing
Instructions: Pair up the students. Give each pair a copy of the article. Set a timer for 2 minutes. In that time, one student must try to summarize the article to their partner, using their own words. The partner should listen and try to understand the main points of the article. After 2 minutes, switch roles. Discuss as a class what each student was able to understand from their partner’s summary.

– Two Truths and a Lie
Instructions: Instruct each student to come up with two true statements and one false statement related to the article. For example, “Lewis Hamilton is a famous F1 driver” (true), “There are F1 races in Africa every year” (false), “Fans in Kenya have F1 viewing parties” (true). Have the students take turns sharing their statements with a partner, who must guess which statement is false. Encourage them to ask follow-up questions to help them make their guess.
