A big elephant named Mali lived in a zoo in the Philippines. She was there for a very long time, almost all her life. People who like animals were sad because Mali was alone. A famous singer named Paul McCartney wanted to help her. But Mali got sick and died, and the zoo said it was because she had a bad sickness inside her.

Mali came to the zoo when she was a baby from a place called Sri Lanka. She was the only elephant there after her friend died. People said the zoo was not a good home for her. But the people at the zoo said she had to stay. Now that Mali is gone, the lady who takes care of the city wants to get another elephant.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into two teams. Write down the key words from the article on separate pieces of paper. One student from each team will come to the front of the class and choose a piece of paper. Without speaking, they must act out the word or phrase to their team. The team that guesses correctly gets a point.

– News Summary
Instructions: In pairs, students will take turns summarizing the article in their own words. They should focus on the main points and try to keep their summary under 1 minute. After both students have had a turn, they can compare their summaries and discuss any differences.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: Give each student a slip of paper and ask them to write down whether they agree or disagree with the statement: “Zoos are good for animals.” Collect the papers and tally the results on the board. Have a class discussion about the different opinions and ask students to explain their reasoning.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Write down key vocabulary words from the article on separate pieces of paper. Divide the class into pairs. One student from each pair will choose a word and draw a picture to represent it, while the other student tries to guess the word. They can only use gestures and drawings, no words allowed.

– Keyword Hangman
Instructions: Write down a key word from the article on the board, leaving out some of the letters. The class must guess the word by suggesting letters one at a time. If a letter is correct, write it in the correct spot. If a letter is incorrect, draw a body part of a hangman. The class wins if they guess the word before the hangman is completed.
