Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into two teams. Write down some key words from the article on individual pieces of paper and put them in a hat. One student from each team will come up to the front and choose a word from the hat without looking. They must then act out the word for their team to guess within a certain time limit (e.g. 1 minute). The team that guesses the most words correctly wins.

– News Summary
Instructions: In pairs or small groups, students will take turns summarizing the main points of the article to their partner/group. They should try to use their own words and keep it concise. After each summary, the rest of the class can ask questions or add any additional information they remember from the article.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: Write a question on the board related to the article, such as “Do you agree that smart computers can help us do more and better things?” Have students raise their hands to indicate their opinion (e.g. agree, disagree, not sure). Then, ask a few students to explain their reasoning behind their answer. Encourage students to use the new vocabulary from the article in their responses.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a set of vocabulary words from the article (e.g. smart computers, app, jobs, etc.). One student from each group will draw a picture to represent one of the words without speaking, while the rest of the group tries to guess the word. The group that guesses the most words correctly wins.

– Think-Pair-Share
Instructions: Give students a few minutes to think about the following question: “How do you think smart computers can help us in our jobs?” Then, have them pair up with a partner and share their thoughts. Afterward, ask a few pairs to share their ideas with the rest of the class. Encourage students to listen and respond to each other’s ideas.
