Plane Trouble: Man Bites Worker, Other Problems in Japan

US-bound ANA flight forced to return to Tokyo after heavily drunk passenger bites crew member mid-flight.

Try this article at a different level?

A plane going to the United States had to go back to Tokyo because a man who had too much to drink bit someone who worked on the plane. The man was 55 years old and from America. When the plane landed, the police took the man. Before this happened, there were other problems with planes in Japan, like a window breaking and two planes bumping into each other.

The plane that had to go back was flying over the big ocean when the man bit the worker. There were 159 people on the plane. People are now talking about being safe on planes in Japan because of this and the other problems. The other problems were a window breaking on a plane flying inside Japan and two planes from different countries touching each other at an airport on an island called Hokkaido.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a set of vocabulary words related to the article (e.g. plane, Tokyo, United States, drink, police, window, bumping). One student from each group will act out a word without speaking, while their group members try to guess the word. The first group to correctly guess the word gets a point. Repeat with different students and words.

– News Summary
Instructions: In pairs, have students take turns summarizing the main points of the article to their partner. Encourage them to use their own words and focus on the most important information. After both partners have had a chance to summarize, they can compare their summaries and discuss any differences or similarities.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: Create a simple survey based on the article, with questions like “Do you think it is safe to travel on planes in Japan?” or “Have you ever had a bad experience on a plane?” Have students go around the class and ask their classmates the survey questions, recording their answers. Afterward, have a class discussion to share and compare the results.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Write down key vocabulary words from the article on small cards or pieces of paper. Divide the class into two teams. One student from each team will take turns drawing a word from the cards and trying to get their teammates to guess the word without speaking. The team that guesses the most words correctly wins.

– Think-Pair-Share
Instructions: Have students think individually about the article for a few minutes, then pair them up with a partner. In pairs, have students take turns sharing their thoughts about the article and discussing any questions or ideas that came up. Afterward, bring the class back together for a whole-group discussion, allowing students to share their partner’s thoughts if they’d like.
