New Money Rule for Visitors to Bali

Foreign tourists visiting Bali will now have to pay a levy to protect the island's environment and culture.

Try this article at a different level?

Starting on Valentine’s Day, people from other countries who visit Bali will have to pay a little extra money, about $9.60, when they arrive. This extra money is for keeping the island’s nature and culture safe because Bali is a very beautiful place with nice beaches and places to see. Last year, almost 5 million people visited Bali. This new rule is for people coming from other countries, but if you’re from Indonesia and just visiting Bali, you don’t have to pay.

A lot of people from Australia go to Bali, more than from any other country. People from India, China, and Singapore also like to visit. But some visitors don’t act nicely, like riding bikes badly or being disrespectful at important places. Because of this, the people in charge of Bali thought about making some rules stricter, like maybe not letting visitors ride motorbikes.

This news about the extra money for visitors came out at the same time as a big election in Indonesia, where lots of people voted. Before the virus that made everyone sick, a lot of Bali’s money came from people visiting. Tourism is very important for Bali, making up 60% of the money the island makes in a year.
