A woman named Jinny Kim did something very important for beauty in the United Kingdom. She was the first to bring a special kind of beauty from South Korea, called K-beauty, to the UK. In 2003, she started putting on fake eyelashes for people, and even famous models like Naomi Campbell have used her services. She is so good at it that she once went on a famous man’s boat to put fake eyelashes on him and his friend.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Divide the class into pairs or small groups. Give each group a list of vocabulary words from the article (e.g. K-beauty, fake eyelashes, nature, respected). One person from each group will choose a word and try to draw it on the board while their group members guess what it is. The first group to correctly guess the word gets a point.

– Keyword Hangman
Instructions: Choose 5 important keywords from the article (e.g. K-beauty, UK, fake eyelashes). Write the number of letters in each word on the board, using dashes to represent the letters. Students take turns guessing letters to try and figure out the keywords. If a student guesses a correct letter, write it in the correct position. If a student guesses a wrong letter, start drawing a hangman on the board. The class must guess the keyword before the hangman is completed.

– Pros and Cons
Instructions: Divide the class into pairs or small groups. Each group will discuss and list the pros and cons of K-beauty becoming popular in the UK. After a few minutes, have each group share their lists with the class and lead a class discussion about the topic.

– Think-Pair-Share
Instructions: Ask the students to think about and write down their opinion on whether they think K-beauty will continue to be popular in the UK. Then, have them pair up with a partner and share their opinions. After a few minutes of discussion, ask some pairs to share their opinions with the class.

– Future Predictions
Instructions: In groups, students will take turns making predictions about the future of K-beauty in the UK. Each student will start with “In the future, I think…” and complete the sentence with their prediction. Encourage students to use future tenses and support their predictions with reasons. After each student makes a prediction, the group can discuss and give feedback.
