There is a big meeting in Dubai where people are talking about how to stop the Earth from getting too hot. They say we need to burn less coal, oil, and gas because these make the air dirty. We should use more clean energy from the sun and wind. But we also need other ways to make power when there is no sun or wind.

Cars that run on gas and diesel make the air dirty too. Cars that run on electricity are much better for the air. More and more people are buying electric cars. We also need to stop a gas called methane from getting into the air because it can make the Earth very hot very fast.

To keep the Earth from getting too hot, we need to take some of the bad air out. Trees and oceans help do this, but we are hurting them. We are trying to make machines that can take the bad air out too. But these machines are new and cost a lot of money. If we make too much bad air, we might not be able to take enough of it out.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into two teams. Write down vocabulary words related to the article on small pieces of paper and put them in a hat. One person from each team takes turns picking a word from the hat and acting it out without speaking. Their team has to guess the word within a certain time limit.

– News Summary
Instructions: Have the students take turns summarizing the main points of the article in their own words. Encourage them to use as much vocabulary from the article as possible. After each summary, the class can discuss if anything was missed or if there are any different interpretations.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: Create a list of statements related to the article, such as “Electric cars are the future” or “We should prioritize clean energy over fossil fuels.” Have the students go around the class and ask their classmates for their opinions on each statement. They can tally the responses and then present their findings to the class.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Write down vocabulary words from the article on individual slips of paper and put them in a hat. One student at a time picks a word and has to draw a picture of it on the board without using any words or letters. The rest of the class has to guess what word it is.

– Two Truths and a Lie
Instructions: Have each student come up with two true statements and one false statement related to the article. They can take turns sharing their statements with the class and the rest of the class has to guess which statement is the lie. This activity encourages students to think critically about the article and use their English skills to create and analyze statements.
