Try this article at a different level?

A woman in Australia is being accused of stealing a delivery van that had 10,000 Krispy Kreme doughnuts in it. The van went missing from a gas station in a Sydney neighborhood in the early morning of November 29th. After a week, the police found the van abandoned in a parking lot, and unfortunately, many of the doughnuts had gone bad. The woman, who is 28 years old, was arrested on Thursday and is now facing charges for stealing the van and driving without a license. There is video footage that supposedly shows her hanging around the gas station before getting into the unattended van and driving away. It’s not clear if she knew about the doughnuts inside the van, which included both Christmas-themed and regular flavors. Krispy Kreme let the police know about what happened and assured their customers that they were working on replacing the stolen doughnuts.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a slip of paper with a word or phrase related to the article (e.g. “delivery van,” “Krispy Kreme,” “stealing,” “gas station”). One person from each group will act out the word or phrase without speaking, while the rest of the group tries to guess what it is. The group that guesses correctly gets a point. Repeat with different words or phrases.

– News Summary
Instructions: In pairs, have students take turns summarizing the article to each other. They should try to include the main points and any interesting details. After each summary, the listener can ask questions for clarification. Encourage students to use their own words and not read directly from the article.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: Write a question on the board related to the article (e.g. “Do you think the woman knew there were doughnuts in the van?”). Have students vote by raising their hands for one of two options (e.g. “yes” or “no”). Then, ask a few students to explain their reasoning for their vote. Encourage discussion and respectful debate.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a list of vocabulary words from the article (e.g. “accused,” “abandoned,” “supposedly”). One person from each group will choose a word and draw a picture that represents it, while the rest of the group tries to guess what the word is. The group that guesses correctly gets a point. Repeat with different words.

– Future Predictions
Instructions: In pairs, have students discuss and make predictions about what might happen next in the story. They can consider questions like, “Will the woman be found guilty?” or “Will Krispy Kreme increase security for their delivery vans?”. After discussing, have a few pairs share their predictions with the class and explain their reasoning.
