New Inventions at Big Show: Are They Really Smart?

The lack of a clear definition for AI has led to skepticism and confusion at CES 2024.

Try this article at a different level?

There is a big show where people show new things they made. Some new things are very interesting, like a pillow that stops you from making noise when you sleep and a cleaner that knows how to clean different floors. But some people are not sure if these things are really as smart as they say. They think maybe the people who made them just want to sell more. The people who make sure ads are true say you can’t lie about how smart your things are.

Some people who make things are not saying “AI” so much now. They still make very smart things, but they don’t talk about it a lot. There is a fridge that can tell you what to cook, but some people wonder if they really need a fridge to help them cook. Because of this, some people might choose things that are not so smart but still work well.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Write down a list of smart things mentioned in the article on separate cards. Each group takes turns choosing a card and acting out the smart thing without speaking. The other groups guess what they are acting out.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Divide the class into pairs. Give each pair a list of vocabulary words from the article. One student chooses a word and draws a picture to represent it, while the other student tries to guess the word. They can only use English to communicate.

– Keyword Hangman
Instructions: Write down a keyword from the article on the board, leaving the spaces for the letters. The class takes turns guessing letters to fill in the blanks. If a letter is correct, it is written in the appropriate space. If a letter is incorrect, a body part of the hangman is drawn. The class must guess the keyword before the hangman is completed.

– Synonym Challenge
Instructions: Write down a list of vocabulary words from the article on separate cards. Divide the class into pairs. Each pair takes turns choosing a card and trying to come up with as many synonyms for the word as possible within a time limit. The pair with the most synonyms wins.

– Two Truths and a Lie
Instructions: Each student writes down two true statements and one false statement about smart things. They take turns sharing their statements with a partner, who must guess which statement is false. The partner provides a reason for their guess in English.
