Airports want to stop hurting the air by using a new kind of fuel made from water called hydrogen. Right now, planes use a special fuel that’s better for the air, but it’s very expensive and hard to make a lot of it. Hydrogen can hold a lot of power and doesn’t make bad air when used. But it’s very cold and hard to keep safe at airports, and it could cost a lot of money to make places for it at airports.

A new company has a smart idea to keep hydrogen safe away from airports. They made special containers that can be taken to the airport and put right into the planes. These containers can keep the hydrogen cold for four days. The company is making a small plane use hydrogen, and it will fly next year to test it. But we don’t know yet if all planes will use hydrogen in the future because it’s still new.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a set of vocabulary words related to the article (e.g. airports, fuel, hydrogen, containers, planes). One student from each group will act out one of the words without speaking, while the other students in the group try to guess the word. The group that guesses the most words correctly wins.

– News Summary
Instructions: Read the article aloud to the class. Then, ask the students to work in pairs or small groups to write a summary of the article using their own words. Encourage them to include the main points and key details. After they finish, have a few pairs/groups share their summaries with the class.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Write a list of vocabulary words from the article (e.g. airports, fuel, hydrogen, containers, planes) on the board. Divide the class into two teams. One student from each team will come to the board and draw a picture representing one of the words, while their teammates try to guess the word. The team that guesses the most words correctly wins.

– Keyword Hangman
Instructions: Choose a keyword from the article (e.g. hydrogen). Write a series of dashes on the board to represent the letters in the word. Students take turns guessing letters. If a guessed letter is in the word, write the letter in the appropriate place. If the guessed letter is not in the word, begin drawing a hangman on the board. The students must guess the word before the hangman is completed.

– Pros and Cons
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a sheet of paper and ask them to create a pros and cons list for using hydrogen as a fuel at airports. Encourage them to think about the advantages and disadvantages mentioned in the article. After they finish, have each group share their lists with the class and facilitate a brief discussion about the topic.
