Japan Sends Fighter Jets to Keep Peace with Other Countries

Japan's cabinet approves export of new fighter jets, marking a departure from its pacifist policies.

Try this article at a different level?

Japan has decided to send fighter jets it made with the UK and Italy to other places. This is new because Japan usually does not do things like this. They want to do this because they are worried about China and North Korea. These fighter jets are very smart and have special tools to help them. Before they send any jets, the people in charge have to say it’s okay. They plan to start using these jets in the year 2035.

Japan is trying to work more with other countries to keep everyone safe. The leader of Japan is going to visit the US to talk about working together. Japan says it needs to send these jets to other places so it can be a good partner in keeping peace. But, Japan still wants to follow its peaceful ways and will be very careful about sending these jets. This is a big change from how Japan used to be after a big war long ago when it said it would only protect itself and not fight in wars.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into two teams. Give each team a set of vocabulary words related to the article (e.g. fighter jets, China, North Korea, peace, etc.). One person from each team will come to the front of the class and act out the word without speaking. The team members will try to guess the word. The team with the most correct guesses wins.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Divide the class into pairs or small groups. Give each group a set of vocabulary words related to the article. One person from each group will draw a picture of one of the words while the rest of the group tries to guess what it is. The group that guesses the most words correctly wins.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: Ask the students to write down their opinion on whether Japan should send the fighter jets to other places. Then, have them pair up and share their opinions with each other. After that, ask a few students to share their partner’s opinion with the class, and facilitate a discussion on the different perspectives.

– Keyword Hangman
Instructions: Write a keyword from the article on the board, but replace the letters with dashes. The students take turns guessing letters and trying to guess the word. If a student guesses a correct letter, write it in the appropriate spot. If a student guesses a wrong letter, begin drawing a hangman on the board. The students win if they can guess the word before the hangman is completed.

– Two Truths and a Lie
Instructions: Have each student come up with two true statements and one false statement related to the article. They will take turns sharing their statements with a partner or small group. The goal is to guess which statement is the lie. This activity encourages students to practice speaking and listening skills while also reviewing the article content.
