A place called Nepal said “no” to a big app called TikTok. They think it’s not good for people to get along. TikTok is used by many people all over the world. But some other places don’t let people use it either. A person who helps run Nepal said TikTok can have bad things on it, so they stopped it right away.

Some people don’t like that Nepal stopped TikTok. They think people should be able to say what they want. A man who helps make rules in Nepal said they should just make sure TikTok is safe, not stop it. The company that made TikTok says it’s safe and doesn’t do anything wrong. TikTok is very liked by young people, even more than some other apps.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Write down several actions associated with using TikTok (e.g., scrolling, filming, dancing, watching). Split the class into two teams. Have one member of each team come to the front and act out one of the actions without speaking. Their team has to guess the action related to TikTok.

– News Reporter Role-play
Instructions: Divide the class into pairs. One student is a news reporter, and the other is a Nepal official who decided to ban TikTok. The reporter asks questions about the reasons for the ban and the expected outcomes, while the official explains the government’s position using simple sentences.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: Prepare a list of simple statements about TikTok and its ban in Nepal (e.g., “TikTok is fun,” “The ban is good,” “People should choose”). Students walk around the room and survey their classmates, tallying who agrees or disagrees with each statement. Discuss the results as a class.

– Word Association
Instructions: Write the word “TikTok” on the board. Students take turns coming up to the board and writing a word they associate with TikTok or the ban in Nepal. For example, they might write “videos,” “rules,” or “young people.”

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Prepare a list of vocabulary words related to the article (e.g., “app,” “ban,” “safe,” “rules”). Divide the class into two teams. One student from a team draws a word on the board without speaking, while their team guesses the word in English. If they guess correctly within a time limit, they get a point.
