Try this article at a different level?

A newspaper made a list of people who give a lot of money to the government. These people are very rich and they help pay for things like schools and hospitals. The newspaper says these people gave more than 5 billion pounds last year. The list looks at money from work, selling things, and buying houses. Some people gave less money this year than last year.

The person who gave the most money is Alex Gerko. He is very rich because he has a company that works with money. Some other people who gave a lot of money are JK Rowling, who writes books, and Ed Sheeran, who sings songs. There are also some women who gave a lot of money. The newspaper says there might be some people they don’t know about who gave money too.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a set of cards with different occupations written on them (e.g. doctor, teacher, musician). One student from each group acts out the occupation on their card without speaking, while the others try to guess what it is. Encourage the students to use gestures and body language to communicate.

– Word Association
Instructions: Write the words “rich” and “money” on the board. Ask the students to think of as many words as they can that are related to these topics. Encourage them to share their ideas with the class and create a word web on the board.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Divide the class into pairs. Give each pair a set of vocabulary words related to the article (e.g. newspaper, rich, money, company). One student from each pair chooses a word and tries to draw it while their partner guesses what it is. Encourage the students to use their English vocabulary to describe the word they are drawing or guessing.

– Speed Summarizing
Instructions: Have the students work in pairs. Give each pair a copy of the article. Set a timer for 2 minutes and ask the students to read the article quickly. Then, one student starts summarizing the article to their partner, trying to include as much information as possible in 1 minute. After 1 minute, the other student takes a turn summarizing the article. Encourage the students to use their own words and avoid reading directly from the article.

– Think-Pair-Share
Instructions: Ask the students to think about the following question: “Why do you think it is important for rich people to give money to the government?” Give them a few minutes to think about their answer. Then, have them pair up with a partner and share their thoughts. After discussing with their partner, ask a few pairs to share their ideas with the whole class. Encourage the students to use complete sentences and practice expressing their opinions in English.
