Bear and Skier: A Surprising Encounter on the Hill

Skier narrowly avoids collision with bear on Lake Tahoe slopes, reminding us to respect wildlife.

Try this article at a different level?

A person skiing almost hit a bear while going down a snowy hill. The bear ran across the place where people ski, but luckily no one got hurt. A man named Tao Feng took a video of the bear running. He saw that the bear found its mom on the other side.

The bear did a good job not hitting any skiers. This shows us that we need to be careful and share the outdoors with animals. People who like to ski or do things outside should remember to look out for animals. They should know what to do if they see a wild animal.

Many people have watched the video of the bear and the skier. It shows that when you’re outside, you might see amazing things. This video reminds us that nature is full of surprises, like in Lake Tahoe. It’s a place with lots of different plants and animals.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a slip of paper with a word related to the article (e.g. skiing, bear, outdoors, nature). One student from each group will act out the word without speaking, while the others guess what it is. The group that guesses correctly gets a point. Repeat with different words.

– News Summary
Instructions: Have the class work in pairs. Each pair will take turns summarizing the article to their partner in their own words. Encourage them to include the main points and key details. After each summary, the other partner can ask questions for clarification. Switch roles and repeat with a different article.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: Write two statements on the board related to the article (e.g. “People should always be cautious when encountering wild animals” and “It’s not necessary to worry about animals while skiing”). Have the class stand up and move to one side of the classroom if they agree with the first statement, or the other side if they agree with the second statement. Give students a chance to explain their opinions to the class.

– Word Association
Instructions: Write the words “skiing” and “bear” on the board. Have the class brainstorm as many words as possible that they associate with these two words. Encourage them to think of related words, such as “snow” or “wildlife”. After a few minutes, have the class share their lists and discuss the connections between the words.

– Sketch It
Instructions: Divide the class into pairs. One student from each pair will describe a scene from the article to their partner, who will then try to sketch it based on the description. After a few minutes, have the pairs switch roles. Once both students have had a chance to describe and sketch, they can compare their drawings and discuss any differences or similarities.
