A new water park in Gothenburg, Sweden, caught on fire. A video showed big flames and a lot of smoke coming from the water slides. Twelve people got hurt but not badly, and one person is missing. The police made people leave a hotel and some offices close by and told everyone to stay inside because of the smoke.

People are talking a lot about the video of the fire. The fire damaged the new water park a lot. The police are trying to find out how the fire started, and they are still looking for one person. They also had to make people leave a hotel and some offices because it was not safe.

The water park was going to be a new part of the Liseberg Amusement Park. It was supposed to open later this year, but the fire has ruined a lot of it. This is sad for the amusement park and for people who wanted to go to the new water slides. The police are still looking into what caused the fire and are making sure the area is safe.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– News Summary
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a copy of the article. Instruct them to read the article and create a summary of the main points. They can use bullet points or write a short paragraph. After they finish, have each group present their summaries to the class.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: Divide the class into pairs or small groups. Give each group a copy of the article. Instruct them to discuss their opinions on the incident and the impact it had on the amusement park and the people involved. After they finish discussing, have each group present their opinions to the class. Encourage them to use vocabulary related to emotions and opinions.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Write down a list of vocabulary words from the article on separate pieces of paper. Fold the papers and put them in a bag or a box. Divide the class into pairs or small groups. One student from each group will take turns drawing a word from the bag or box and try to draw it on the board without using any words. The other students in the group have to guess the word. The first group to guess the word correctly gets a point. Continue playing until all the vocabulary words have been used.

– Keyword Hangman
Instructions: Write down a keyword from the article on the board, leaving out some letters and replacing them with dashes. Divide the class into pairs or small groups. Instruct them to take turns guessing letters to try and complete the keyword. Each incorrect guess results in a body part of a hangman being drawn on the board. The group or pair that correctly guesses the keyword before the entire hangman is drawn wins the game.

– Future Predictions
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Instruct each group to discuss and make predictions about the future of the amusement park and the water park. They can discuss possible causes of the fire, the impact on the park’s reputation, and the actions the park might take to recover. After they finish discussing, have each group present their predictions to the class. Encourage them to use vocabulary related to speculation and future tense.
