A missing dog in Bedfordshire, England, was successfully located and reunited with its family after 12 days, thanks to the use of a thermal camera fitted to a drone.

Try this article at a different level?

A dog named Ulysse got lost in England, but after 12 days, people found him using a special camera on a flying robot. The camera could see Ulysse’s body heat, and he looked like a white spot on the video. The flying robot followed him to a bush where he was hiding. The dog’s owner, Sam Boyle, is now trying to get money to help the group that found Ulysse buy another flying robot.

The flying robots with special cameras are really good at finding lost pets. The camera made it easy to see Ulysse and find out where he was. He was in a bush for a long time. Sam Boyle, Ulysse’s owner, wants to help the group that found his dog by getting them another flying robot to find more lost pets.

Ulysse’s story shows that new technology, like flying robots with heat cameras, is important for finding pets that are lost. The camera helped people see where Ulysse was because of the heat from his body. Sam Boyle wants more people to use flying robots to save animals. Ulysse getting back home shows that technology can help bring pets back to their families.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the students into small groups. Give each group a set of vocabulary words related to the article, such as “dog,” “lost,” “camera,” “robot,” “find,” etc. One student from each group will act out a word without speaking, while the other group members guess what word they are acting out. The group that guesses correctly gets a point.

– News Summary
Instructions: Have the students work in pairs. Each pair should take turns summarizing the article in their own words. They should try to include the main points and key details. After each summary, the other student can ask questions to clarify anything they didn’t understand.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: Write different statements related to the article on the board, such as “Using technology to find lost pets is a good idea,” “It’s better to search for lost pets on foot than with a flying robot,” “Owners should be responsible for finding their own lost pets,” etc. Have the students walk around the classroom and ask their classmates for their opinion on each statement. They should record the responses and be prepared to share their findings with the class.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Divide the students into pairs. Give each pair a list of vocabulary words from the article. One student will choose a word and draw a picture to represent it, while the other student tries to guess the word. They can take turns drawing and guessing, trying to get as many correct answers as possible within a time limit.

– Speed Summarizing
Instructions: Give each student a copy of the article. Set a timer for one minute. The students should read the article silently and then, when the timer starts, try to summarize the main points as quickly as possible. After one minute, they can compare their summaries with a partner and discuss any differences. Then, set the timer for another minute and have them try to improve their summaries. Repeat this process a few times to see if they can continue to condense and improve their summaries.
