Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink, is looking for people to test its new technology. This technology aims to connect human brains to computers. It will be tested on people who can’t move their bodies. The test will involve putting a device in the brain that lets people control a computer with their thoughts.

Neuralink will use a robot to put tiny threads into the part of the brain that controls movement. These threads will send brain signals to an app that understands the person’s intended movements. People with severe paralysis or a disease called ALS might be able to take part in the test. It’s not clear yet how well Neuralink’s method will work compared to other companies’ methods.

Neuralink is new to the field of brain-computer interfaces and has competition from other companies. Blackrock Neurotech and Precision Neuroscience are also developing technology for people with paralysis. Recent studies have shown good results in using implants to watch brain activity and understand speech. It’s not known yet how well Neuralink’s technology will work compared to these existing solutions.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– News Summary
Instructions: In this activity, students will work in pairs or small groups. Each group will take turns summarizing the main points of the article in their own words. They should aim to include the key information and important details. After each group presents their summary, the rest of the class can ask questions or provide feedback.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: Divide the class into pairs or small groups. Each group will come up with a list of questions related to the article. The questions should be designed to gather opinions from their classmates. For example, “Do you think connecting human brains to computers is a good idea?” or “Would you be willing to participate in a test like this?” After the groups have prepared their questions, they can take turns asking them to the rest of the class and recording their responses.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Write a list of key vocabulary words from the article on the board. Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of blank index cards or small pieces of paper. Each group will take turns choosing a word from the list and drawing a picture that represents that word. The other groups must try to guess the word based on the drawing. The group who guesses correctly gets a point, and the group with the most points at the end wins.

– Pros and Cons
Instructions: Divide the class into two groups. One group will brainstorm the pros of Neuralink’s new technology, while the other group will brainstorm the cons. Each group should come up with at least three points. Afterward, the groups can take turns presenting their points to the class and engaging in a discussion about the potential benefits and drawbacks of the technology.

– Headline Creation
Instructions: In this activity, students will work individually or in pairs. Each student or pair will create a catchy headline for the article. The headline should capture the main idea of the article and be attention-grabbing. After everyone has created their headline, they can share them with the class and discuss which ones are the most effective and why.
