Try this article at a different level?

A man named Noland Arbaugh showed people how he can play a chess game on a computer without using his hands. He did this by thinking about moving a mouse on the screen. Noland can’t move from his shoulders down because he got hurt in a diving accident. But he used a special brain tool made by a company called Neuralink, which is owned by a man named Elon Musk. Noland thinks this tool is very cool and is happy about it.

In a video, Noland was with a person named Bliss Chapman, who knows a lot about the brain tool. They talked about how this tool can help people who can’t move well to do things by thinking. This video showed that the brain tool could really help people who have trouble moving. It made people excited about how this tool can make life better for people who can’t move parts of their bodies. The video was a way to show everyone how smart people are working to help others.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into two teams. One student from each team will come to the front of the class and act out a word or phrase related to the article (e.g. chess game, computer, diving accident). The rest of the class will guess what they are acting out. The team that guesses correctly gets a point.

– Word Association
Instructions: Write the word “brain” on the board. Have students take turns saying a word that they associate with the word “brain” (e.g. smart, think, tool). Encourage students to explain why they made that association.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Choose 5-10 words from the article (e.g. chess, diving, tool) and write them on separate pieces of paper. Divide the class into pairs. One student from each pair will pick a word and draw a picture to represent it. Their partner must guess the word based on the picture.

– Keyword Hangman
Instructions: Choose a keyword from the article (e.g. Neuralink). Draw a series of dashes on the board to represent each letter in the word. Have students take turns guessing letters. If a guessed letter is correct, write it in the corresponding dash. If the letter is incorrect, draw a body part of a hangman. The game continues until the word is guessed or the hangman is completed.

– Think-Pair-Share
Instructions: Ask students to think about how they think the brain tool mentioned in the article can help people who can’t move well. Then, have them pair up with a classmate and share their thoughts. Afterward, ask a few pairs to share their ideas with the whole class.
