New Rules to Stop Tricky Online Shopping

UK government to ban "drip pricing" and fake reviews, aiming to improve consumer transparency and protect customers from hidden fees and misleading information.

Try this article at a different level?

The UK leaders want to stop a bad thing when you buy stuff online. Sometimes, when you are almost done buying something, they tell you there are extra costs you didn’t know about. They are making new rules so that when you look at things to buy, you see all the money you need to pay right away. This will help people not spend too much money. They found out that many places where you can buy tickets or book hotels do this and it can cost people a lot of money.

They also want to stop fake good words about things you can buy. Sometimes people write good things that are not true to make you want to buy stuff. The new rules will make sure that the good words you read are real. This is important because almost everyone reads these words before they decide to buy something. They also want to make sure that when you go to the store, the price you see is the real price you will pay. This will help you know you are getting a good deal. The new rules should start very soon, and they will help people not get tricked when they buy things.

Warm-up Activities:

– Charades
Instructions: Divide the class into two teams. Write keywords from the article on small pieces of paper and put them in a hat. One student from each team will take turns picking a keyword and acting it out without speaking. The team members must guess the keyword within a certain time limit. The team with the most correct guesses wins.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Divide the class into pairs. Give each pair a list of vocabulary words from the article. One student will choose a word and draw a picture representing that word, while the other student tries to guess the word. They can only use visual clues, no speaking allowed. After a certain amount of time, switch roles. The pair with the most correct guesses wins.

– Keyword Hangman
Instructions: Write a keyword from the article on the board, leaving out the vowels. Students take turns guessing letters to try and solve the word. If a student guesses a correct letter, it is filled in on the board. If they guess an incorrect letter, a body part is drawn on the hangman. The students must try to solve the word before the hangman is completed. Repeat with different keywords.

– Headline Creation
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Each group will create a headline for an article based on the information in the text. Encourage them to be creative and use vocabulary from the article. After a few minutes, have each group share their headline with the class and explain why they chose it.

– Think-Pair-Share
Instructions: Have students think individually about the new rules mentioned in the article and how they might affect their own online shopping experiences. Then, pair them up with a partner and have them discuss their thoughts. Finally, have a few pairs share their ideas with the class.
