Apple’s sales have gone down, even though many people are buying iPhones and using services like Apple TV+. In the three months ending on 30 September, the company made $89.5 billion, which is 1% less than last year. This is the fourth time in a row that sales have gone down. But, the company still made $23 billion in profits because of a lot of people buying iPhones and using services like iCloud and Apple Music.

Not as many people bought Mac computers and iPads after the lockdown. Apple is worried that there might be problems with getting the new iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max to customers. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, told investors that the company is working hard to fix these problems and hopes to balance supply and demand soon.

Even though iPhones and services are doing well, other Apple products are not as popular. Sales of Mac computers went down to $7.6 billion, from $11.6 billion last year. The company’s sales in China also went down by 2.5%. But, when you take into account changes in foreign exchange rates, Apple’s business in China actually grew compared to last year.

Covid restrictions and tensions between the US and China have affected Apple’s business in China. Tim Cook went to China last month to show how important the Chinese market is to Apple. Even with the challenges, he is confident in Apple’s relationship with China, which is an important place for making its products.

Group or Classroom Activities

Warm-up Activities:

– News Summary
Instructions: Students work in pairs to summarize the article in their own words, focusing on the main points: Apple’s recent sales decrease, the success of the iPhone and services, the drop in Mac and iPad sales, the supply challenges with the iPhone 15 Pro, and Apple’s relationship with China. They should aim to present their summary in under two minutes to the rest of the class.

– Opinion Spectrum
Instructions: Create a line in the classroom representing a spectrum of opinions from “strongly agree” to “strongly disagree”. Read out statements related to the article such as “Apple will overcome its current sales challenges quickly” or “The decrease in Mac and iPad sales is a significant concern for Apple’s future”. Students physically place themselves along the line to indicate their opinion and discuss their reasoning with classmates nearby.

– Keyword Taboo
Instructions: Write down key terms from the article (e.g., sales, iPhones, Apple TV+, iCloud, Mac, iPad, China, supply chain, foreign exchange rates, Covid restrictions). Students play in teams. One student must describe the term to their team without using the word itself or five additional taboo words associated with it. For example, for “iCloud,” the taboo words could be “Apple,” “service,” “storage,” “online,” and “data”.

– Future Predictions
Instructions: In groups, students discuss and make predictions about the topics mentioned in the article. They might predict the future of Apple’s sales, the success of the iPhone 15 Pro, how Apple will solve its supply issues, or the company’s relationship with China in the coming years. Each group then shares their predictions with the class.

– Pros and Cons
Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Assign each group to discuss the pros and cons of a specific aspect from the article, such as the increase in iPhone sales, the decrease in Mac and iPad sales, the impact of Covid restrictions on Apple’s business, or the tensions between the US and China. After a set amount of time, each group presents their pros and cons to the class, which can lead to a larger class discussion.
