Nigeria has made a big step towards making its own fuel by delivering a million barrels of crude oil to a new refinery in the country. This is a big deal because Nigeria has had to buy refined oil from other countries, which costs a lot of money. The Dangote refinery, which took almost seven years to build, will start making fuel once it gets five million more barrels of crude oil. The refinery cost $19 billion and is expected to produce about 650,000 barrels of fuel per day.

The owner of the refinery, Aliko Dangote, who is the richest person in Africa, wants to get the refinery running at full speed in the next few months. He is excited to sell the first batch of fuel to Nigeria. The company hopes to provide all of Nigeria’s fuel needs and even have extra to sell to other countries. This is a big deal for Nigeria because it is the biggest economy in Africa and makes a lot of oil. Nigeria has had problems with fuel supply in the past, like not having enough money to buy it and the cost of fuel going up a lot.

The new president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, recently got rid of the fuel subsidy, which was costing the government a lot of money. This made the price of fuel go up by more than 400%. Some people are mad about this and want the government to change its mind, but President Tinubu thinks it will be good in the long run. The government says it has already saved over $1.8 billion by getting rid of the subsidy, and that money will be used for things like schools and hospitals. Making its own fuel will help Nigeria be less dependent on other countries and will have a big impact on the economy and politics.

Warm-up Activities:

– News Summary
Instructions: In pairs or small groups, have students read the article and create a short summary of the main points. Encourage them to focus on the key information and use their own words.

– Opinion Poll
Instructions: Have students discuss in pairs or small groups their opinions on the decision to get rid of the fuel subsidy in Nigeria. Then, have them conduct an opinion poll in the class, where they ask other students about their thoughts on the issue. They can create a simple chart or graph to display the results.

– Vocabulary Pictionary
Instructions: Divide the class into two teams. Give each team a list of vocabulary words from the article. One member from each team will come up to the board and draw a picture to represent one of the words. The rest of their team must guess the word based on the drawing. The team with the most correct guesses wins.

– Speed Summarizing
Instructions: Give each student a small piece of paper and have them write a one-sentence summary of the article. Collect the papers and redistribute them randomly. Students must then read the summary they received and try to summarize it even further in just a few words. Continue this process for a few rounds, with students summarizing summaries, until the summaries become very brief and concise.

– Future Predictions
